Making a Difference

For over 300 years the James Marshall Foundation CIO has been supporting young people.
Here is some of the feedback and inspirational stories we have received recently.

Thank you very much for the grant, this will help me massively in my apprenticeship and help me hopefully become a fully qualified mechanic.

We are always delighted to hear how our support has helped and the impact our grant contributions have had. Our previous contributions have included tools and special clothing for work, university related costs and support for other educational courses and training.

Thank you for all your help throughout my time at university. I really appreciate the funding I received. I graduated with first-class honours!

Just to let you know that our son passed his tractor training last week.

Further Education/Starting Work

Thanks to your team for supporting all local young people to have positive opportunities that help them grow and develop as people.

Recent research has highlighted that extra-curricular activities are important to young people and result in a range of positive outcomes. These include: improved social skills, achievement, attendance at school, more confidence, help with mental health and wellbeing.

We are so grateful that some of our students can access music lessons. I hear all the time from families how much they value your support.

Extra-Curricular Music and Sport

I picked up the laptop today. I am delighted, thank you very much. It will really help me in my studies and future work.

The ability to use technology is an important life skill and essential in the workplace. Over the past few years we have worked closely with schools and a local IT company to ensure our grant contributions towards technology meet the educational needs of young people.

Thank you so much for the laptop for our grandson, it was such a pleasure to see him doing his homework last night and enjoying something for the first time in a very, very long time!

Laptops

For some students these really are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Students in receipt of grants, particularly for trips, get to experience places and learning outside the classroom which they would otherwise miss out on. Educational research highlights the importance of building cultural capital in our young people, through experiencing places and activities they may not otherwise have access to, they gain deeper knowledge and diversify their skill set. Trip grants also have a significant impact not only on knowledge but on building relationships and developing a range of skills.
(Local Secondary Schools)

Simply it would allow our child to attend her first ever residential trip with the school and to experience all the team building activities planned and to learn how to be independent away from home.

Residential School Trips

My daughter walked into secondary school on the first day with her head held high.

Uniform, as the word suggests, is about “fitting in” with your peers/contemporaries and encourages engagement in both education and social interaction. New uniform can positively impact a child’s sense of worth and that in turn can enhance their approach to school and learning.

Thank you for all you do and for the voucher for uniform, this will be so helpful and give them the same opportunities as others. I cannot thank you enough.

In 2019 we were approached by the mother of a young gymnast who was a National Champion and had just been invited to join the GB Gymnastics Foundation Programme. With nationally recognised talent and potential we have provided grants contributing to training costs over the last six years. He has continued to excel and in 2024 won two European Junior gymnastic titles. Alongside his incredible talent, dedication and family support, grants from the Foundation are helping him to achieve his dreams.
